General
We make timber cabinet hardware. Handles, pulls and knobs in solid oak and walnut, designed in house and finished in hard wax rather than lacquer.
Based in Western Australia, designed here and held in stock here, so orders ship quickly rather than waiting on a container.
Yes. Anyone can order from this site, whether you are renovating one kitchen or specifying across a whole project.
If you are in the trade, a trade account adds account pricing and priority dispatch. More about trade accounts.
Every piece is designed in house, led by Ben Bechelet, from first sketch through to final prototype. It takes about eight months to bring a handle from an idea to something we are prepared to sell.
We do not have a studio or showroom of our own. The range is currently displayed at Entry Point Distribution, 4/327 Canning Highway, Palmyra WA, open Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm.
If you cannot get there, the sample roll holds fifteen pieces across every design and finish. Timber changes with the light it is in, so seeing it in your own room is worth doing before you commit. Where to buy.
Fill out the trade registration form. Once approved you will see account pricing when logged in, along with priority dispatch and access to samples and display boards.
Trade accounts suit cabinet makers, joiners, designers, architects and builders.
Yes. If you are specifying across a house or a development, email sales@ookami.studio with what you need and we will price it.
The range runs from a 28mm knob to a 452mm pull in the same timber and finish, so one specification can carry through a kitchen, laundry, bathroom and wardrobes.
Yes. Everything ships from within Australia, so you are not waiting on an overseas order.

Product, care and installation
As a starting point, a handle should span roughly one third of the drawer width. Drawers up to 600mm generally suit 128mm, drawers from 600mm to 900mm want 192mm or larger, and very wide drawers either take a long handle or two shorter ones set apart.
Weight matters as much as width. A deep pot drawer loaded with cast iron wants a longer handle than a shallow cutlery drawer of the same width.
Hole centres are the distance between the centres of the two screw holes, not the length of the handle. A 128mm handle is longer than 128mm overall.
If you are replacing existing hardware, measure the hole centres and match that number and you will not need to drill new holes.
Because it is solid timber, not a printed finish. Grain, tone and figure change from board to board depending on species, age and where in the tree it came from.
Expect some variation across a set, more noticeably in walnut than oak. It is the nature of the material rather than a fault, and it settles as the pieces age together.
M4 screws are supplied with every handle and knob, at 22mm or 25mm depending on the product. That suits a standard 16mm or 18mm door or drawer front.
Thicker fronts need longer screws. We can supply up to 50mm on request, and replacement 22mm screws are available separately.
Drill pilot holes with a 1/8 inch bit, keeping the spacing accurate. Painters tape over the drilling area helps stop the cabinet face chipping.
Start both screws by hand before tightening either one. Driving one screw home first pulls the handle out of square and makes the second hole hard to find.
Use a screwdriver rather than a power drill. Timber compresses, and an overdriven screw will mark the back of the handle and can eventually split it.
More detail on the installation page.
No, and we would rather you did not. A Phillips head screwdriver, tightened firmly but not overdriven.
A dry or barely damp cloth is all that is needed. Our handles are finished in hard wax rather than lacquer, which means the finish sits in the grain rather than forming a film over it.
Avoid solvents, bleach and anything abrasive, and do not leave water sitting on the timber. More in cleaning timber handles.
Yes, on vanities and cabinetry in normal use. Timber handles are used in bathrooms and laundries all the time.
What they are not suited to is standing moisture, outdoor cabinetry exposed to weather, or anywhere that will be cleaned with harsh chemicals. If a surface regularly sits wet, specify something else. More on high moisture areas.
Yes, and that is intended. Timber darkens gently with handling, most noticeably on the pieces used every day. The brass on the OK.4 is left uncoated and will soften and darken too.
Most people find it looks better at year five than it did on day one. If you want hardware that looks identical after five years, choose the black finish.

Five years against defects in materials, workmanship and structural integrity.
Normal wear is not covered, and that includes the natural darkening of timber and the patina that develops on uncoated brass. Both are the material behaving as intended. Full terms on the warranty page.
